KENYA – KARIMIKUI (AA)
Karimikui is a well-regarded coffee factory located in Kirinyaga, Kenya, and is part of the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society alongside Kiangoi and Kii. Established in 1953, it serves around 3,507 smallholder farmers who grow coffee and vegetables at high altitudes (1,700–1,900m) in fertile volcanic soil with ample rainfall.
Coffee cherries are handpicked, then pulped and separated by water flotation. Dense beans ferment for 24 hours, are washed, and ferment again for 12–24 hours. After further washing and soaking for up to 24 hours to enhance flavor complexity, the beans are sun-dried in two stages for 5–10 days before being sent to a mill for resting. This meticulous process results in coffees with bright acidity and rich fruity flavors.
